We often don’t realize that the noises we are exposed to can have damaging effects. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, approximately 26 million American adults suffer from noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Hearing loss from noise exposure is preventable. Regular use of hearing protection is vital to ensure that you preserve your hearing acuity and protect your ears from permanent damage.

How does noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) happen?

NIHL happens when an individual undergoes prolonged exposure to sound that is 85 decibels and above (see chart), or encounters short bursts of intense sound, such as a gunshot or the explosion of a firecracker.  These loud sounds can cause NIHL when the tiny hair cells in our inner ear are exposed to these noises.  Once these tiny hair cells are damaged due to excessive noise exposure without protection, that loss of hearing can become permanent. Here are a few tips to protect your hearing and have safer experiences:

  1. Stand at least 100 ft away from the source of the sound if you can (i.e. fireworks)
  2. Wear hearing protection
  3. Children and infants should wear ear protection too
  4. Download the NIOSH Sound Level Meter App to help monitor your noisy environment.
