If you wear behind the ear (BTE) hearing aids, you may have noticed that it can be challenging to wear a mask with your hearing aids. We have had several patients advise that they have nearly lost their hearing aids while removing their mask. Here are a few tips to help you successfully wear a mask with your BTE hearing devices.
Sew Buttons on Headbands or Hats
Each of the options below were made with items found in my home. I had multiple mismatched buttons in my sewing kit, old hats and headbands that were easily converted to assist with wearing a mask. I simply sewed two buttons over the ears and then looped the elastic from the mask over the buttons keeping the mask away from the ears. This will keep your mask from interfering with your hearing aids.
Masks that Tie
Using a mask that ties behind your head will also keep your mask away from your ears. There are many tutorials available on YouTube with instructions on how to make this type of mask. By tying behind your head, you eliminate the need for anything to be behind your hears except your devices.
Neck Scarf or Face Gaiter
One last option that we recommend, is a neck wrap or Face Gaiter. These can be purchased from many different outlets online. This option is the preferred method when you have BTE hearing aids, because it can be worn without having to go behind your head. You simply pull it up to cover your nose and mouth when needed and lower it when it is not needed.
